How to Use Lighting an Audio Properly During a Presentation

Setting up the stage for a presentation might seem easy enough. Simply turn on the microphone, start the slideshow, and hit the lights…right? Not exactly. The success of a presentation doesn’t depend entirely on the presenter. There are other often overlooked details such as lighting and audio that can make a big difference. Lighting and audio can affect the way the audience perceives your message, so it’s not something you want to take lightly. Consider the following tips for utilizing the right lighting and audio effects to create a more meaningful and impactful presentation.

Use a Darker Background for Slideshows

If you plan on utilizing a slideshow tool such as PowerPoint for your presentation, you want the background behind the speaker to be a darker color, such as black or purple, so the slideshow shows up better. You then want to make sure the font on the slideshow is white so it really pops against the background. Audiences will have a harder time reading a slideshow if the background is lighter, so the  background lighting is really important to consider.

Use Bright Stage Lighting Without a Slideshow

If you plan on presenting with a slideshow, you want to be sure and use appropriate lighting so the audience can easily see the speaker. Even if the presentation is during the day, it is important to utilize a stage light and not rely solely on natural light. It is crucial that the audience can see the presenter, especially if they are the main focal point. Appropriate lighting will make it possible for the audience to see facial expressions, eye contact, and other important body language.

Choose the Right Microphone

There are a few choices when it comes to a microphone and it’s really up to the speaker. Some speakers prefer a handheld microphone while others prefer a hands-free lavalier microphone that allows for hand gestures. It is also important for the speaker to arrive early and practice with the microphone to be sure it is at the appropriate distance from the mouth so it’s not too soft or too loud.

Set Different Lighting Looks

You can really make an impact by adding decorative lighting effects. A lighting designer can help you design a lighting effect that utilizes colored lights on stage. It’s important to note, however, when to use decorative lighting and when to use functional lighting and a designer can help you arrange the right lighting for your presentation. Depending on the topic of the presentation, decorative lighting can add some visual interest and flair to your presentation.

Make Sure the Audio is Loud and Clear

You may have prepared a fantastic presentation but if no one can hear it, all that hard work will go to waste. Quality sound is a very important element in creating a positive audience experience. Be sure and test the audio prior to the presentation to be sure the speaker can be heard from all areas of the room. The correct amount of audio of key to delivering a successful presentation.
