Creating a Strong Opening for Your Presentation
Researchers estimate that we have between 30 and 60 seconds to capture someone’s attention. So, what does that mean for speakers? Your opening statement needs to be compelling enough to engage your audience right away. A powerful opening can hook your audience, spark their interest, and create a memorable first impression. Here are some effective strategies for creating a strong opening for your presentation.
1. Shocking Statement or Startling Statistic
One impactful way to open your presentation is with a compelling and attention-grabbing statement. This could be a startling statistic, a thought-provoking question, or a relevant quote. By adding some shock value to your opening statement, you immediately pique the audience’s attention and leave them wanting to know more.
2. Tell a Personal Story
Another powerful way to capture attention is to connect with your audience on a personal level. Tell them a personal story or share a personal experience. This helps you build rapport with your audience and establish a connection on a deeper level.
3. Do Something Unexpected
Bill Gates once engaged his audience by telling them about how malaria was preventable with mosquito nets and how vulnerable the people were without them. He then opened a jar and told the audience, “Don’t worry because only some of the mosquitoes in this jar have malaria.” As you would imagine, he got quite the reaction from his audience. Doing something dramatic and unexpected is a great way to engage your audience right from the start.
4. Show a Picture Without Context
People are intrigued by puzzles so consider displaying an interesting image with no context. People will immediately begin trying to figure out why that image is being shown. Not only will this pique interest, but it will prompt conversation as well.
5. Start with a Question
When you begin with a question, you immediately engage with the audience and make them participants. You are involving them and bringing them into the conversation. Even if you ask a rhetorical question, it gets the audience thinking and prepares them to listen.
